Iranian Student Leader Sentenced To Prison

TEXT SIZE - +
A Tehran court has sentenced a leader of the Iranian Office to Foster Unity (Daftar Tahkim Vahdat) to six years in prison, RFE/RL's Radio Farda reports.

Morteza Seymari, a member of the student group's Central Council, was given one year in prison for propaganda against the Islamic republic and five years for threatening national security.

The sentence against Seymari was reported on the opposition-leaning "Aftab" news website.

Since Iran's disputed June election, student leaders have faced a crackdown by the authorities, who view the universities as a hotbed of protest against the government. Hundreds of student activists have been arrested and some, like Seymari, have been sentenced to prison.
