BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz ombudsman Tursunbek Akun's family says he is in the hospital with serious injuries after being attacked during violent clashes between opposition supporters and security forces on April 7, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Akun's relatives told RFE/RL today that he has a concussion and numerous bruises and other injuries.

They said Akun tried to stop protesters from committing violence and looting in Bishkek, but a mob attacked and beat him.

Akun, 51, is a former dissident and prominent human rights activist. He was named ombudsman in 2008.
