BISHKEK -- The famed Suleyman Mountain in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh has been added to UNESCO's world heritage list, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

The decision came at a UNESCO meeting in Seville, Spain, on June 26.

Suleyman Mountain is located in the center of Osh, and is considered one of the ancient centers of Central Asia and the Great Silk Road.

Thousands of Muslim pilgrims visit Suleyman Mountain every year, and the late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto made several pilgrimages there to visit the house of Babur, the 16th-century founder of the Moguls dynasty.

Heritage sites, which are deemed as having outstanding international value, can be cultural sites, such as old quarters of cities or monuments, or natural sites such as the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, which were also added to UNESCO's list.
