Media Rights Group Urges Turkmenistan To Begin Real Reforms

December 11, 2008
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is urging Turkmen leaders to realize that independent journalists and NGOs are not a threat to the country.

RSF's Elsa Vidal told RFE/RL's Turkmen Service that her organization is waiting for Turkmenistan's leadership to undertake real reforms in the country.

RSF's call to Turkmen authorities comes on the eve of parliamentary elections on Sunday. Turkmenistan remains the most authoritarian and closed country in Central Asia.
