KABUL -- The Independent Election Commission in Afghanistan (IECA) has announced that more than 4.5 million Afghans have registered to vote during the registration period, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reports.

IECA head Azizullah Ludin told RFE/RL that this figure does not include the 12 million Afghans who were already registered.

According to officials in Kabul, most of the newly registered people are internally displaced people and refugees who have returned from Iran and Pakistan.

The Afghan presidential election is currently scheduled to be held in August.
