Moscow Concert Held To Support Political Prisoners

TEXT SIZE - +
A concert to support political prisoners in Russia was held in Moscow's Gorbunov House of Culture on May 25, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Prominent Russian actors and bard singers performed popular songs and monologues about the Soviet-era gulag.

The concert was called "For Your and Our Liberty!" and was organized by the Russian opposition movement Solidarnost (Solidarity) and NGOs who protect the rights of prisoners.

It was only advertised online and tickets were about $8.

An event organizer, Mikhail Kriger of the Union to Protect Political Prisoners, told RFE/RL that a similar concert was organized in 2003 to support citizens in the war-torn republic of Chechnya.

Money raised at the May 25 concert will be used to support political prisoners and their families.
