'Mr. Potato, Make Everyone Happy By Saying Farewell'

November 09, 2009

The video says it all. A young man writing a message to Iran’s President Mahmud Ahmadinejad on a wall. “Mr. Potato, make everyone happy and say goodbye.”

The video is reportedly from the November 4 protest in Tehran when thousands of members of the Green opposition returned to the streets and demonstrated against Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad has been accused of distributing free potatoes ahead of the disputed June 12 election in order to get votes.

And opposition demonstrators regularly chant, “We don’t want a potato government.”

About This Blog
Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus. The name recognizes RFE/RL's role as a surrogate broadcaster to places without free media. You can write us at transmission+rferl.org
