CHISINAU -- A new law requiring that government employees be screened for corruption has been signed into law by Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin.

The legislation is intended to weed out corrupt officials and those who pose a “danger to national security.”

All current and future government employees -- including candidates for political office -- will be screened, though the decisions can be challenged in court.

Some parties have criticized the law, saying it will be abused by the government and used to cripple the opposition ahead of the April 5 parliamentary elections.

Communist official Iurie Stoica told RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service that he doesn't think the new law will be applied before this year's elections.
