BAKU -- Bayram Safarov has been selected as the head of the Azeri community in Nagorno-Karabakh, the disputed Azerbaijani territory that is occupied by Armenia, RFE/RL's Azerbajaini Service reports.

Safarov replaces Nizami Bahmanov, who died a few months ago.

Safarov was the only candidate for the position and was elected unanimously at the first congress of the Nagorno-Karabakh Azerbaijani community in Baku on June 5.

He is also the executive head of the town of Shusha, which is currently populated almost exclusively by Armenians and is known as Shushi.

Tens of thousands of Azerbaijanis fled Nagorno-Karabakh during the 1988-93 war in the region.
