CHISINAU -- Moldovan police have raided an independent TV station close to Moldova's border with Romania.

Two staff members at Albasat TV were detained for several hours and police confiscated the company's records and the accountant's computer.

Station chief Efim Bardan told RFE/RL's Moldovan Service that the authorities were looking for something "wrong in our finances" during their hour-long search so they can pressure the station to do "as the Communist government wishes."

He said the raid was also meant to intimidate the station ahead of the country's parliamentary elections in April.
