TEXT SIZE - +
Journalist Yelena Maglevannaya has been found guilty of libel in the Russian city of Volgograd, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

A court found Maglevannaya's reports about alleged abuse of a Chechen inmate at the LIU-15 prison in Volgograd Oblast to be libelous.

The court ruled that she has to pay a fine of about $5,200.

Maglevannaya told RFE/RL that she will officially challenge the verdict.

In her articles, Maglevannaya wrote that guards at the penitentiary beat and tortured Chechen Zubayr Zubayrayev.

Russian rights activists visited the prison and documented injuries to Zubayrayev after Maglevannaya's articles were printed.
