KRASNOGORSK, Russia -- The prosecutor in the trial against fugitive Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky has said that he's seeking a 15-year jail term for the defendant, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Berezovsky's court-appointed lawyer, Valery Doronin, said the prosecutor asked the court to sentence the second defendant, Yuly Dubov, to nine years in prison.

Berezovsky and Dubov are charged with embezzling some 140 million rubles ($4.5 million) from the AvtoVAZ and LogoVAZ auto companies in Russia's Samara Oblast in the early 1990s.

The trial is being held in absentia as both defendants are living abroad. Berezovsky has lived since 2001 in Great Britain, where he was granted political asylum.

A Moscow court found Berezovsky guilty of embezzlement in 2007.

He was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to repay $9 million that the court said he took from the state airline Aeroflot.
