Tajiks Bothered By Burial Of Stray Dogs In City Dump

June 16, 2009
KULOB, Tajikistan -- People in the southern Tajik city of Kulob are complaining about the stench created when more than 100 stray dogs were buried in the city dump after being euthanized, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

Community services official Rahmon Odinaev told RFE/RL that the dogs were destroyed because they were dangerous to the local population.

People living near the dump say burying the dogs in the dump caused an intolerable stench that affects their daily lives.

Gulchera Salimova told RFE/RL that in the spring and summer the smell in the district is unbearable.

Abduhalim Shohusainov, a Kulob veterinary service official, says euthanized stray animals should be buried in special cemeteries to keep the animals' remains away from underground water sources.

The Kulob community services office says a total of about 400 dogs have been disposed of in the city dump.
