Thousands Rally In Kyrgyzstan Following Ethnic Disturbances

By RFE/RL
Thousands of people rallied in southern Kyrgyzstan today following ethnic disturbances there on May 19.

An RFE/RL correspondent says some of the 5,000 people at a horse track in the town of Jalal-Abad assaulted the regional governor, who had gone to talk to the crowd together with the country's acting defense minister.

There has been persistent unrest in southern Kyrgyzstan following the ouster last month of President Kurmanbek Bakiev in violent protests.

On May 19, clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks left two people dead and dozens wounded in Jalal-Abad.

The interim government declared a state of emergency and blamed Bakiev's supporters for fueling interethnic tensions.

On May 19, Roza Otunbaeva, the head of the interim government, was appointed acting president until December 31, 2011, with the country's presidential election postponed until October 2011.

The interim government is expected later today to present the draft of a new Kyrgyz constitution.
