ALMATY -- Three Kazakh opposition leaders are scheduled to go on trial this week on conspiracy charges.

An Almaty district court on January 22 will hear the case against unregistered Alga party leader Asylbek Kozhakhmetov and prominent opposition leaders Bolat Abilov and Tolen Tokhtasynov.

Kozhakhmetov told RFE/RL that the three have been charged with conspiracy for allegedly helping two suspected criminals obtain political asylum in Ukraine several years ago.

Kozhakhmetov says the charges are politically motivated.
