NAZRAN, Ingushetia -- Two armed insurgents were killed in a special operation by police in Nazran, Ingushetia's largest city, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The Ingushetian Interior Ministry says Akhmet Tsoroev and Magomet Ortskhanov were members of illegally armed groups.

They were discovered by police in downtown Nazran, where they exchanged gunfire with security forces.

One insurgent was killed in the exchange, while the other escaped by commandeering a minibus with several passengers in it.

A grenade exploded during a second shoot-out and the other insurgent was killed.

One hostage was severely injured.

No casualties were reported among police.

Scores of insurgents, police, and government officials have been killed this year in violence in Ingushetia.
