CHISINAU -- U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Asif Chaudhry has said that Moldova is "on the path to democracy" but must still improve governance and fight corruption, RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports.

Chaudhry said the fact that the country has had two elections this year is proof of the progress it has made since becoming an independent state in 1991.

The U.S. ambassador, speaking at a ceremony in Chisinau marking the end of a U.S. assistance program for Moldova, added that Washington is ready to further assist Moldova in its transition to democracy and to a functioning market economy.

Chaudhry added that the United States is also willing to help Moldova improve its business climate by cutting bureaucracy and corruption.
