U.S. Forces Kill 'Warlord' In Afghan Air Strike

KABUL (Reuters) -- U.S. forces in Afghanistan killed a man they described as a "warlord" and 16 other militants in an air strike, the U.S. military has said.

They named the target as Mullah Mustafa, and described him as a commander of about 100 armed men in Ghor Province in the west of Afghanistan, with links to both the Taliban leadership and Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

The military said U.S.-led coalition forces had called in the air strike after observing the commander leaving his compound in Ghor's mountainous Sharak district and meeting with fighters in a remote area on June 9.

U.S. forces in Afghanistan frequently rely on air strikes to kill suspected militant commanders.
