ACCRA (Reuters) ---Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir should face justice in the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the Darfur conflict if national courts do not organize a trial, a U.S. diplomat has said.
"We think that President Bashir should present himself to the court to face charges," U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson told reporters in Ghana when asked if Bashir should go before The Hague-based ICC.
"If their own court won't do it and the international court is available, he should present himself to it," added Carson, speaking after ICC appeal judges paved the way for possible genocide charges against Bashir.
