The United Nations says Afghan prisoners are still being tortured despite the government's promises of reforms.
In a report issued on January 20, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said that "torture persists and remains a serious concern in numerous detention facilities across Afghanistan."
The UN said that prisoners still suffer from practices such as beatings with cables.
The report said that such practices persist despite efforts by the UN and international forces during the past year.
The report said that Afghan government efforts have not stopped abusive practices.
Afghan presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi said that the administration does not have a policy of abuse and promised an investigation into the abuse cases reported by the UN.
