Afghan Blast Kills Six Police Officers

x
Afghan officials say an explosion in the country's south has killed six local police officers.

Mohammad Ibrahim, the police chief in the district of Nad Ali in Helmand Province, said a police vehicle ran over a roadside bomb.

The victims were members of the Afghan Local Police, a village defense unit that is overseen by the Interior Ministry.

It is tasked with ensuring security in the remote rural areas where the national police and soldiers do not have direct control.

Also in the south, a member of Afghanistan's top religious council was assassinated on October 9 in Tarin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan Province.

Police said a gunman shot and killed Abdul Samad as he was driving his car.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the assassination.
