YEREVAN -- An Armenian court has sentenced former presidential candidate Vardan Sedrakian to 14 years in jail for the attempted murder of a rival in the February election.
At the sentencing hearing on September 23, Sedrakian again insisted he was innocent.
The leader of Armenia's Union of National Self-Determination Party, Paruyr Hairikian, survived a shooting attack in Yerevan on January 31.
Police later arrested two men for their alleged involvement in the attack. The two were also sentenced on September 23 to 12 and 14 years in jail.
Days before the February 18 presidential election, Sedrakian told journalists that the two arrested suspects used to work for him as house painters, and expressed fear of being charged with involvement in the crime.
Investigators arrested Sedrakian in March and charged him with ordering the attack.
