Alleged Djindjic And Stambolic Killer In Court

18 May 2004 -- The alleged planner of the slaying of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic appeared again in court today, this time on charges of killing former Serbian President Ivan Stambolic.

Milorad Lukovic turned himself in to Serbian police earlier this month. The court today granted him a delay in proceedings of over a month to allow him to prepare his defense.

Prosecutors say Lukovic -- then a special police unit chief -- ordered the kidnapping and execution of Stambolic in August 2000.

The same trial will consider allegations that Lukovic is also behind the assassination attempt against former opposition leader, now Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic, in Montenegro, in June 2000.

Lukovic first appeared in court for allegedly planning the assassination of Djindjic, who was gunned down last March by sniper fire in Belgrade.
