U.S. Military Says Iraqi Child Killed In Baghdad Shooting

July 06, 2004

6 July 2004 -- The U.S. military says American soldiers shot dead one Iraqi child and wounded another when the car their father was driving failed to stop at a checkpoint in Baghdad last night.

A U.S. statement said the vehicle failed to obey verbal and visual warnings to halt.

An Iraqi militant group meanwhile says it has moved an abducted U.S. Marine to "safety."

Al-Jazeera television quoted a statement from the group, Islamic Response, as saying Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun has pledged to leave the U.S. military.

The whereabouts of Hassoun remain unknown.

The interim Iraqi government said it provided intelligence to the U.S. military for an air strike yesterday in the city of Al-Fallujah in which at least 10 people were reported killed.

The air strike purportedly targeted a suspected hideout linked to militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
