Editor Of Opposition Magazine Killed In Azerbaijan

Baku, 2 March 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The editor of an outspoken Azerbaijani magazine was fatally shot in his apartment building in Baku.

Elmar Huseynov was the founder and editor of "Monitor," a magazine sharply critical of the Azerbaijanii authorities. He has repeatedly been facing lawsuits filed by officials for the articles published in the magazine.

A representative of the international Helsinki human rights committee in Azerbaijan, Arzul Abdullayeva, characterized the killing as "terrorism against the press."
