Shoot-out In North Ossetia Leaves Two Ingush Wounded

June 04, 2005

4 June 2005 -- Ingushetia's Interior Ministry reported today that a shootout on 3 June near the North Ossetian capital Vladikavkaz left two people wounded.

A group of Ingush who had recently returned to North Ossetia's Prigorodny district came under fire on 3 June while driving toward Nazran, in neighboring Ingushetia. Two Ingush were wounded in the shootout and brought to Nazran's main hospital.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack.

Tensions between Ingush and Ossetians have been running high since 1992, when a short war pitted the two communities against each other.

Thousands of ethnic Ingush were forced to leave North Ossetia's Prigorodny district during the conflict and resettle in Ingushetia. Only a few of them have returned to their home region so far.
