Explosions In Iraq Kill Several People

June 07, 2005

7 June 2005 -- Several explosions in Iraq today have killed at least seven people.

Brigadier General Anwar Mohammed Amin says a roadside bomb in Hawijah, about 240 kilometers north of Baghdad, killed three civilians.

And hospital and military officials say at least 4 Iraqi soldiers and civilians were killed in three nearly simultaneous suicide car bomb attacks at army checkpoints in the same area.

The attacks come as Iraqi and U.S. troops continue with an offensive -- called Operation Lightning -- aimed to break the insurgency. Iraqi officials say nearly 900 people have been arrested since the offensive started two weeks ago.
