U.S. Planes Bomb Suspected Taliban Site

2 July 2005 -- U.S. fighter planes bombed a suspected Taliban compound in a mountainous part of eastern Afghanistan as part of an ongoing search for a missing American military unit.

A U.S. military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Jerry O'Hara, said the target was "an enemy compound in Konar Province." He declined to say if there were any casualties.

Hundreds of U.S. and Afghan troops backed by attack helicopters have been scouring the area for the small U.S. reconnaissance team that has been missing since a battle with insurgents on 28 June.

A Chinook helicopter that crashed on 28 June killing 16 members of U.S. Special Forces had been dispatched on a mission to rescue the missing personnel.

The U.S. military has not said how many people are missing. But they deny Taliban claims that members of the unit
have been killed or captured.

In central Afghanistan today, Uruzgan Province Governor Jan Mohammad Khan said that an assault on a purported Taliban mountain encampment killed 18 insurgent fighters. He said that two Afghan soldiers died in the action.
