Iranian Dissident's Health Reportedly Worsening

22 July 2005 -- The family of a high-profile political prisoner in Iran says his health is worsening after a prolonged hunger strike.

Akbar Ganji's family members are quoted as telling AFP today that poor hospital conditions have accelerated his worsening condition.

Ganji was sentenced to six years in jail in 2001 after writing articles accusing authorities of murdering dissidents.

Ganji's family members say he has lost more than 18 kilos during a month-long hunger strike aimed at securing his release.

The United States, the European Union, rights groups, and Iranian student activists have called for Ganji's release.
