Van Gogh Killer Receives Life Sentence

26 July 2005 -- A Dutch court has sentenced the man who confessed to killing movie director Theo van Gogh to life in prison.

Mohammed Bouyeri, a Dutch-born son of Moroccan immigrants, shot and stabbed Van Gogh on a street corner in central Amsterdam last November . He said he killed Van Gogh in defense of Islam.

Van Gogh was known for his outspoken anti-Islamic statements and had criticized the treatment of women in Islam in one of his films.

The murder whipped up racial and religious tensions in Holland.
