Bush Adviser Gets Senate Nod

July 27, 2005

27 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The U.S. Senate's Foreign Relations Committee on 26 July unanimously approved the nomination of Karen Hughes to a new diplomatic post designed to improve America's image around the world.

Hughes was approved by the panel to assume to post of undersecretary of state for public diplomacy.

At her confirmation hearing last week, she told the committee that she would strive to convince the world of US "goodness and decency."

Hughes, a former television reporter who worked for U.S. President George W. Bush while he was governor of Texas, played a key role in his election in 2000.

She returned in an informal capacity to help his successful bid for a second term last year.
