Seven Alleged Kurdish Rebels Killed In Turkey

July 27, 2005

27 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Turkish security officials say the military has killed seven suspected rebels from the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.

The officials said today the operation, involving troops and helicopters, was continuing in an area close to the Iraqi and Iranian borders.

The PKK recently stepped up violence in the country's mainly Kurdish southeast after calling off a five-year unilateral cease-fire last year.

In neighboring Iran, three soldiers were killed on 26 July in an ambush that the Interior Ministry blamed on the PKK.

Ministry spokesman Jahanbakhsh Khanjani said today the ambush took place near the Turkish border. He did not elaborate on why the PKK was held responsible rather than Iran's Kurdish rebels.
