Georgia, Abkhazia Hold Talks

4 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Officials from Georgia and its breakaway region of Abkhazia meet today for security talks in Tbilisi.

TEXT SIZE - +
According to ITAR-TASS, the talks were made possible following a meeting earlier this week between the special UN envoy to Georgia Heidi Tagliavini, Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh, and Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba.

Abkhazia has twice refused to take part in such talks after Georgian border guards on 3 July detained a Turkish ship bound for Abkhazia with foodstuffs. On 1 August, the cargo was brought to Abkhazia through the mediation of the UN mission in Georgia.

Abkhazia seceded from Tbilisi in the early 1990s, triggering a war that killed thousands and forced nearly all of its ethnic Georgian population to flee.
