Security Council Approves Afghan Force Extension

September 13, 2005

UN Security Council

13 September 2005 -- The UN Security Council today extended the authorization for the NATO-led peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.

A council resolution extends the mandate of the 11,000-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) for a year beyond its expiration on 13 October 2005.

It authorizes member states participating in the force to "take all necessary measures to fulfill its mandate."

The NATO-led force operates separately from a 21,000-strong U.S.-led coalition, focusing on tracking down remnants of Al-Qaeda and the deposed Taliban government, mainly in the border area with Pakistan.
