Red Cross Says Hunger Guantanamo Strike ''Serious''

7 October 2005 -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says that prisoners are hunger striking at the U.S. military jail at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
ICRC chief spokeswoman Antonella Notari today said that the situation is serious, and that the ICRC is following the situation with concern.
Notari did not comment on reports that some of the prisoners are being force fed.
On 6 October, Amnesty International said that U.S. authorities are keeping 21 of the prisoners alive by forcing food into their stomachs through tubes pushed up their noses.
Rights advocates on 7 October called on Britain to intervene in the hunger strike, which involves about 200 of the some 500 prisoners at Guantanamo.
