Ukrainian Prosecutor-General Sacked

Piskun earlier this year

Kyiv, 14 October 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko today sacked Prosecutor-General Svyatoslav Piskun.

Oleh Rybachuk, head of Yushchenko's administration, made the announcement at a press conference in Kyiv. No other details were immediately available.

"I can say that we have probably saved Piskun from himself, from opening a criminal case against himself," Rybachuk said. " He has been very excited in recent days, opening so many cases. I think this is a normal, well-timed decision by the president so he [Piskun] doesn't open a case against himself, investigate it in one day and put himself in jail."

Piskun had recently started investigations against one of Yushchenko's political allies, Petro Poroshenko, a former high-ranking security official.
