Kazakh Opposition Facing Detentions, Trials, Fines

Opposition presidential candidate Zharmakhan Tuyakbai (file photo) (RFE/RL) 17 October 2005 -- Two more Kazakh opposition figures have been convicted and fined for participating in an unsanctioned rally held earlier this month.

Amirzhan Kosanov and Gulzhan Yergalieva are both members of the For a Just Kazakhstan bloc. They were found guilty of being part of an 8 October rally in Almaty.

Last week, party member Tolen Tokhtasynov was also fined for participating in the rally. He was detained and taken to court while en route to meet visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. He didn't make it to the meeting.

Two more For a Just Kazakhstan members, Bolat Abilov and Oraz Zhandosov, are due in court tomorrow to face similar charges.
