Russia Continues Hunt For Militants In Nalchik

October 18, 2005

18 October 2005 -- Russian security forces are continuing their hunt today for Islamic militants in Nalchik following last week's attacks in the city.

Reports say security forces using tanks sealed off an area of the city and are conducting house-to-house searches. Local television urged city residents not to leave their homes.

One man was reported killed today when he allegedly put up resistance during a document check. Two other men who also resisted managed to escape.

Alleged Islamic extremists on 13 October launched a coordinated series of attacks on police stations and other government buildings in Nalchik, the capital of Russia's southern republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. More than 130 people were reported killed in the attacks and the fighting that followed.

Radical Chechen field commander Shamil Basaev claimed he was behind the attacks.
