24 October 2005 -- Conservative candidate Lech Kaczynski has claimed victory in Poland's presidential runoff.

Electoral officials say Warsaw Mayor Kaczynski leads by about 10 percentage points on his rival Donald Tusk with 90 percent of votes counted. Pro-business Tusk has already conceded defeat.

Tusk, who had pledged to drive Poland's economy forward, saw his lead dwindle significantly against Kaczynski in the last days of the election campaign.

Kacynski gained support on promises to safeguard the social safety net amid high unemployment.
