Iran Announces Major Diplomatic Shakeup

November 02, 2005

2 November 2005 -- Iran's government has announced a massive overhaul of the Islamic republic's diplomatic service.

Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki says around 40 ambassadors or heads of mission will be replaced by the March 2006. Among those set to be replaced are Iran's representatives in London, Paris, Berlin, and Geneva.

The student news agency ISNA quotes Mottaki as adding that the replaced diplomats should, in principle, continue to work for the Foreign Ministry.

He gave no further explanation for the shakeup, which comes just months after the presidential election victory of hard-liner Mahmud Ahmadinejad.
