NATO's International Security Assistance Force said there were casualties from the first bombing, but would not confirm a statement by Interior Ministry spokesman Yousuf Stanizai that a German soldier was killed in the explosion.

The Associated Press quotes a police commander as saying the first blast occurred in east Kabul on a main road frequented by vehicles belonging to NATO's International Security Assistance Force and the U.S.-led coalition.

There is no word yet of casualties from the second bombing.

Some 12,000 International Security Assistance Force soldiers are providing security to Afghanistan's capital and its surroundings.
