(RFE/RL)

3 December 2005 -- A Kremlin-backed Unified Russia party has won the largest number seats in Chechnya's new parliament.

The Interfax and ITAR-TASS new agencies are quoting Central Election Commission Chairman Ismail Baikhanov as saying that Unified Russia won 24 of the 58 seats in the region's two-chamber parliament.

Unified Russia, which dominates the federal parliament, was followed by the Communist Party, which won six seats in the two chambers, and the liberal Union of Rightist Forces, which won four seats.

The reports could not be immediately confirmed.
