Uzbekistan Resumes Energy Supplies To Tajikistan

16 December 2005 -- Uzbekistan has resumed power supplies to Tajikistan after the countries’ governments struck a deal in the Uzbek capital Tashkent.

Tajik energy official Abdukarim Niezov described the negotiations as tough.

Tajikistan's northern Sughd region suffered a blackout last month after Uzbekistan broke off electricity and gas supplies.

Tajikistan, which relies heavily on hydroelectricity, experiences energy problems in winter due to declining water levels in a reservoir that feeds a hydropower plant.

But in summer Tajikistan generates enough power itself to be able to export to neighboring countries.
