Beijing Opposes Iran-Related U.S. Ban On Chinese Firms

28 December 2005 -- China has called on the United States to lift a ban imposed on six Chinese companies for allegedly supplying Iran with military equipment and technology.

The sanctions prevent the companies from doing business with the U.S. government or with U.S. companies. Washington based its 27 December decision, which also affects two Indian companies and one Austrian firm, on the Iran Non-Proliferation Act passed in 2000, which aims at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

In a statement issued on 28 December, the Chinese foreign ministry said the Chinese government has always adopted a serious and responsible attitude to anti-proliferation efforts.

The United States has accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear arms under the guise of its civilian nuclear-energy program.
