3 January 2006 -- An order from Afghanistan's government to remove security barriers blocking streets in Kabul is causing concern to foreign forces and the international community serving in the Afghan capital Kabul.

A spokesman for the U.S., Lieutenant Mike Cody, said U.S.-led forces, international aid agencies and foreign governments had all voiced concern about the plan, which is aimed at relieving traffic congestion in the city.

UN spokesman Adrian Edwards said the UN is waiting for more information from the Afghan government before it takes action to remove the barriers.

Edwards said such barriers have been necessary for security in the past.

A spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, Yousef Stanizai, told reporters on 2 January that all barriers set up on streets or pathways in Kabul must be removed by 7 January. He said no exceptions would be accepted.
