Death Toll Tops 120 In Day Of Iraq Violence

The bloodiest attacks took place in Karbala and Al-Ramadi (RFE/RL)

6 January 2006 -- More than 120 people were killed and 200 wounded in three suicide attacks in Iraq yesterday, the bloodiest day since last month's parliamentary election.


In the city of Karbala, at least 49 people died and 100 were wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a holy Shi'ite shrine.


Shortly afterward in the city of Al-Ramadi, another 69 people were killed, and 70 others injured when a suicide bomber attacked police recruits.


Later in Karbala, five U.S. soldiers were killed after a third suicide bomber destroyed their vehicle.


On 4 January, another suicide bomber in the northern Iraqi town of Ba'qubah killed at least 36 mourners at a Shi'ite funeral.
