Bombing Kills Student In Eastern Afghanistan

7 January 2006 -- A student has been killed and at least one police officer injured in an explosion that authorities initially believed was a suicide bombing but are since treating as a remotely detonated bomb attack in Afghanistan's eastern city of Jalalabad, RFE/RL's Afghan Service reported.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible.

RFE/RL correspondent Shair Shah Hamdard said a security-forces spokesman in Nangarhar Province later confirmed that authorities believed a remotely detonated device was used in the attack. "[The spokesman] confirmed that it was not a suicide attack. It was done by remote control and the target was a vehicle belonged to the provincial police academy . The person who was killed was a student passing by at the time of explosion."

Today's incident came two days after 10 people were killed in a suicide bombing by a suspected Taliban militant in the central Oruzgan Province.
