U.S. Journalist's Father Pleads For Her Release

January 21, 2006

The deadline set by Carroll's captors has passed with no word on her fate (file) (epa)

21 January 2006 -- The father of abducted American journalist Jill Carroll has appeared on television to plead with her captors in Iraq to spare her life.

Jim Carroll told Arab language television station Al-Arabiya the death of his daughter would do little toward achieving their demand that all female Iraqi detainees be released.

Carroll's captors said on 17 January that they would kill her unless female Iraqi detainees were released within 72 hours.

The 28-year-old is a freelance reporter for U.S.-based “The Christian Science Monitor” newspaper.  She was abducted two weeks ago while on her way to interview a major Sunni Arab political figure. Her translator was killed during the abduction, but her driver escaped.

Yesterday, one of Iraq's most influential Sunni leaders, Adnan al-Dulaimi, publicly called for her release. But the deadline passed without any word of her fate.
