Blair Warns Iran To End 'Active Support' For Terrorism

23 January 2006 -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair said today that Iran must end what he called its "active support" for terrorism abroad.

Blair's remark comes amid a crisis over Iran's nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for peaceful civilian purposes. The United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Israel have expressed concerns that Iran may be trying to build atomic weapons.

The board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is due to start a two-day emergency meeting on 2 February on Iran's nuclear program. The European Union will seek to have a resolution passed referring Tehran to the UN Security Council, at that meeting.

The Iranian government today said it would not be "intimidated by threats." Iran's chief nuclear negotiator says Iran will resume uranium enrichment on an industrial scale if the dispute is referred to the UN Security Council.

In Moscow, officials said Iran's top negotiator, Ali Larijani, will be in the Russian capital on 24 January for talks with Russian Security Council head Igor Ivanov and other top officials on the issue.
