Ingush Authorities Identify Slain Gunman

January 28, 2006

28 January 2006 -- Authorities say they have established the identity of a gunman who was killed by law enforcement officers in the southern Russian republic of Ingushetia on 27 January.

Law enforcement officials said the victim, 30-year-old Aslambek Khatuyev, was a member of several unspecified armed groups.

Officials said he was an active participant in the June 2004 attacks on three towns in Ingushetia, where militants targeted police stations, checkpoints, and government buildings.

Nearly 100 people were killed in the attacks, most of them security personnel.

Khatuyev was killed during a special operation in the city of Karabulak. According to the authorities, Khatuyev opened fire on them with a pistol.

There were reportedly no other victims in the incident.
